Be Bench-ed!

The sun is up high once again. And to sit in the open air is one of summer’s great pleasures. The soft breezes and the sunshine, and the clipped grass- these are the reasons an outdoor bench is more than just another piece of furniture. It’s a destination, a place to go for sensory awakening, whether positioned under a shade tree, on a grassy hilltop, or in a porch alcove.

When it comes to bench styles, there are many options to choose from.

Material is primarily a matter of personal preference, although the one you pick should be weatherproof. Some woods, including teek and cedar, are naturally resistant to decay brought on by the elements and thus make excellent seats. They can be treated at the start of each season, or you can let them turn gray over time.

Metal is another popular choice and often delivers a formal look. Wrought iron won’t topple in the wind, but it can corrode if not properly painted or sealed. Aluminum and stainless steel are both rust-resistant and do very well outdoors- especially if they are given a powdery-coated finish.

A third category is natural stone, which is difficult to install, given its heft, but then requires little upkeep beyond occasional cleanings with damp cloth.

Go out, take a spot and lounge on!
